What is photograph restoration and retouching?

A brief overview...

...Restoration means giving you a quality image as if it had just been taken by a professional. It's not only our old photographs that require restoration and retouching, disposable cameras as well as digital cameras on the wrong setting can lead to incorrect exposures giving us bad quality prints. Retouching can even mean giving you a great hairday in your graduation pictures that currently features an 'interesting' hairdo. Working from high resolution scans ensures we can preserve and enhance details, making adjustments where necessary. An expertise in top of the line software is also essential, as well as a keen eye for photographic composition and colour correction.

The Process

To give you a better understanding of exactly what photograph restoration and retouching entails here is an outline of our basic process:

  • Photo is scanned at a high resolution to preserve details and allow for quality enlargements
  • Your photo is then brought into image editing software and the colour balance and white balance are adjusted
  • dust, scratches, stains, blemishes, bumps and redness are carefully removed
  • any large flaws and tears are reconstructed
To give you the best quality image it is important that you are very clear about what, if any, changes need to be made to the photograph. For example, if you want a person removed or makeup touched up please remember to give as much detail as possible when describing the work so that we can ensure your satisfaction with the final product! You will always be able to proof your final image before accepting it, and if additional work needs to be done you can request it then.
